The Red Barn Store

ANNE TELLER JOINS FAMILY AND OAK HILL FARM SONOMA

In 1977, some years after the death of his first wife, Otto Teller married Anne (Bucklin) Teller. Anne Teller remains very active in the daily activities at the farm, channeling most of her energies into horticultural endeavors such as preparing thousands of annual seedlings for spring transplant into the fields, propagating perennials, and nurturing plants all over the farm from transplant to harvest.

Anne Teller began growing vegetables at Oak Hill Farm in the early 1980’s, primarily for family and friends. She had an idea that she might keep the farm work crew busy through the summer months growing vegetables for sale to augment the flower operation. At first, customers were invited to leave money in the cash box for vegetables, which were simply put out on a table in the barn. Before long, word had spread and quite a few people were showing up at The Red Barn Store looking for produce. A cashier was needed to serve customers, then more produce was needed to keep up with demand, and then one of the workers mentioned that he knew how to make wreaths with dried flowers. Customers seemed to like the wreaths quite a bit. Almost accidentally The Red Barn Store had grown into a real farm stand. Anne Teller’s objective of keeping the workers busy through the customarily slow months of summer had been achieved. In spades. With spades.
